A definite need is an angle knife. This helps smooth the icing on the top and sides of the cake.
Disposable plastic decorating bags. These are really inexpensive and come in a package of 25.Don't let the name discourage you. You can use these bags over and over again.
Couplers: You will need 4 or 5 sets so you can use more than one color icing at time.
Tips. Basic tips come in a set: Wilton has a great starter set.
A cake pedestal is nice to have. It will give the cake a wonderful presentation. Target always has them. Or look on line for one. No need to be made of Sterling silver......a pretty porcelain or glass one works great.
Some sprinkles in different colors.
Theme decorations should be bought at the time of each cake...so if they are candy they will be fresh.
For adult cakes silk flowers work great...and the presentation is impressive.
I hope this entry is helpful. Any questions, please comment.

Filling for center i.e., Strawberry or Raspberry
Icing enough to ice top and sides of cake
Fresh Strawberries or Raspberries for top of cake
2 large boxes of Pirouline wafer tube cookies
Pretty ribbon 1" wide......red, pink, floral....your preference- 1 yard
Pretty cake pedestal or cake plate
Place first layer of cake on cake plate or pedestal, now add filling (preserves)
Place second layer on top. Ice top and sides of cake. No need to smooth out top or sides.
Remove the wafer tubes carefully from package (they break easily). Place one wafer tube at a time on the side of the cake vertically. Be very careful now. Don't push too hard, just enough for the wafer tube to stick to the icing. Continue around the cake..close enough so that there is no icing showing.
Now place fruit, strawberries or raspberries on the top. Arrange so it looks like they are in a basket.
Using the ribbon now. Put the ribbon around the center side of the cake and carefully tie a bow.
Serves 12. Just remember how much company you are having so there will be enough cake for all.
I hope you enjoyed going down memory lane with me. I will have more from my Nanny's cookbook in the future.
